It appears as if the Mike Glennon experiment is done and the Josh McCown project is back on the table for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Glennon announced head coach Lovie Smith’s decision tonight during his weekly radio show on the Bucs’ radio affiliate, 620 WDAE. The surprising move seems like a last-ditch effort for a team with the worst record in the NFC at 1-7.
After an 0-2 open to the season and a dreadful start to the Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, McCown left the game with a thumb injury and Glennon stepped in for relief duty. While that game was completely out of hand early on, Glennon was able to lead the Bucs to victory the next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since that monumental upset, it’s been all downhill.
The Bucs are currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak that has virtually ended their season. Three of the four losses have been by six points or less, with two of them coming in overtime — the other being a 48-17 romp against the Baltimore Ravens. Tampa Bay’s defense had played well enough in those close games to get a few wins, but the offense failed to gain any sort of consistency moving the ball.
Glennon has thrown for 1,417 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions; McCown has thrown for 420 yards with four touchdowns (two rushing) and four interceptions.
The Bucs take on the Falcons this Sunday with the Week 3 beatdown still fresh in their minds. McCown has been hungry for another crack to lead this team, and he should have a solid day against the 30th ranked passing defense in the NFL.
