To say that the New York Giants have not played up to the standards expected of them heading into the 2014 NFL season is an understatement. However, with two recent injuries to both the Dallas Cowboys‘ and Philadelphia Eagles‘ starting quarterbacks, it is not unreasonable for them to believe they could make a run at the NFC East, but they need a resurgence in a major way, and pronto, in order to do so.
A Week 10 trip west to take on the Seattle Seahawks typically would not be the week many would believe to be the best scenario to accomplish such a feat, but it might just be the case, as the Seahawks have looked like less than a shell of the team that won a Super Bowl just nine months ago. To do so, however, ‘Big Blue’ is going to need a big game from TE Larry Donnell.
Donnell has been one of the few pleasant surprises the Giants have experienced thus far in 2014 and has become somewhat of a security blanket for QB Eli Manning. He has accumulated a solid 37 receptions, 357 yards and five TDs — a statline no one predicted over the summer.
We must see more of this production in Week 10 against Seattle, as the Seahawks have been among the worst in the NFL at covering tight ends (27th overall) and will likely have most of their attention focused wide on the likes of Rueben Randle and rookie sensation Odell Beckham Jr.
If New York is able to get any kind of production from off-tackle runs on either side of the line, it will relieve a ton of pressure off the middle of the field from Seattle’s defensive line and linebackers.
This will give Donnell an opportunity to expose the Seahawks over the middle, on corner routes and seemingly anywhere else on the field he chooses to do so. But he has to be up to the task and cannot let an otherwise intimidating Seahawks defense get in his head, as he has the ability to run roughshod over such a suspect unit.
