Dallas Cowboys Still Need To Learn Winning Mentality

While there isn’t quite panic in the streets of Dallas just yet, people are starting to get a little restless here in the Lone Star State. Dallas Cowboys fans, who are usually unrealistic and impatient beings, actually came into the season with fairly low expectations; and after the embarrassing loss to the San Francisco 49ers on opening weekend, it appeared that things were going to be much worse than initially anticipated. But then this team rattled off six straight wins, including a victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle, and all of a sudden thoughts of a Super Bowl run started dancing in the heads of Cowboys fans everywhere.

Well, since that glorious time, Tony Romo has injured his back yet again and the team has lost two straight games causing them to temporarily fall out of first place in their division. Even with these recent events, however, it looks as though Cowboys nation is holding off on putting everyone on suicide watch for now because Romo is coming back this week. But there is still cause for concern as Brandon Weeden has once again reminded everyone in the NFL that he has no business being in the league, and every Cowboys fan is well aware of the fact that this team has a recent history of choking once December and January arrive.

Well let me just remind everyone that similar to the Jimmy Johnson-led teams from the 90s, this team also needs to learn how to win before they take the next step. I know everyone seems to forget this, but Johnson and those championship teams had to suffer through a 1-15 and a 7-9 season before they reached the playoffs in his third season with an 11-5 record. And in those playoffs they suffered a blowout loss to a Detroit team on the road that went on to lose to the eventual champions in the Washington Redskins.

Three of the next four seasons, however, saw this team dominate the NFL as they were on their way to three Super Bowl wins and once again bringing football pride to the state of Texas. But none of this would have been possible without some stumbling along the way.

I know that in today’s NFL fans are used to seeing franchises go from worst to first, but they don’t take a deep look into how these teams are built to make it to that point. There are a number of smart draft choices that have been made as well as a few savvy free agent pickups to help mold a championship caliber team. And once this team comes together, they don’t automatically have winning in their blood; it takes time to build the necessary chemistry and thick skin needed to make it through a long and brutal NFL season.

So I ask the fans to continue to be patient with this Cowboys team as the right pieces are finally being put into place. It’s just a matter of time before this team learns how to handle adversity on a regular basis. Who knows, this team could be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy sooner than you think.
