The Kansas City Chiefs head up to Ralph Wilson Stadium during Week 10 to take on the resurgent Buffalo Bills, hoping to improve their record to 6-3 and increase their foothold in the AFC wild card race. After drubbing the New York Jets last week, the Chiefs look to be finding their mojo and building on the success they enjoyed last season. That being said, their success in Buffalo rests mostly on Dwayne Bowe’s ability to produce.
Buffalo’s defense has been solid across the board this season, which will present the Chiefs, who have lacked a go-to offensive option this season, with a problem. The Bills rank seventh in weighted DVOA against the rush; more importantly, however, they are the second-best team in football at neutralizing pass-catching running backs, which may make for a long day for running back Jamaal Charles. Overall, the Bills rank third against passing offenses, but have a significant hole that must be exploited by Bowe if the Chiefs are to come out of Buffalo with a win.
While the Bills are great at neutralizing pass-catching backs and opposing tight ends, they rank 19th and 28th against No. 1 and No. 2 wide receivers, respectively. Bowe has yet to have a dominant game this season and has neither reached triple-digit yardage nor gotten into the end zone this year. However, he’s the best the Chiefs have. His 398 receiving yards are the most of any KC wideout and are more than double No. 2 receiver Donnie Avery’s 166 yards.
Although Bowe may be more comfortable acting as a complementary piece, he may have to function as an offensive centerpiece on Sunday if the Bills neutralize tight end Travis Kelce and Charles.
