Each week of the season, it’s necessary to search for new ways to say that the Chicago Bears have hit rock bottom. In their previous game — a 51-23 thrashing by the New England Patriots — it seemed that must be as bad as it could get. In that game, the Bears were down 38-7 by halftime.
Tonight, against the Green Bay Packers, they bettered that standard of incompetence by falling behind 42-0 by halftime. The wheels have come off on this train wreck of a team and there is no telling how low they will set the bar for future comparisons of bad teams for generations to come.
Anyone who has witnessed previous Aaron Rodgers vs. Bears games knew what to expect, but the shocking part is watching the joy on the Green Bay sideline. NBC commentators quoted Packers coach Mike McCarthy coming out of halftime as saying that — with a 42-0 lead — they wanted to come out in the second half and punch the Bears in the mouth.
In fact, it became obvious that routing the Bears was not enough when McCarthy threw the challenge flag to question a three-yard pass completion for the Bears — a play that brought about a 2nd and 7 with the Packers up 48-7. Despite the Bears vs. Packers rivalry being anything but competitive for decades, the Packers take great joy in embarrassing the Bears each and every game.
Jay Cutler and Marc Trestman again provided proof they were overmatched, out-coached and out-played. However you phrase it, they appear ill-prepared and unable to put together the slightest semblance of a competent offense. No longer can we stomach the statements of how the Bears have a talented offensive team and two of the best receivers in the game. That simply is not the case, and all the statistics back up that reality.
While the offense is certainly bad, they are not even in the same conversation of how bad things are for the Bears’ defense. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was granted a pass for last year’s terrible defensive performances due to so many injuries to key players. This year, there is no free pass. Tucker’s defense fails on all levels and is laughable — literally, as the camera’s caught many times along the Green Bay sideline.
There needs to be accountability in Chicago. As an organization, you simply cannot continue to put a product this bad in front of your fans each week. The problems run so deep that it’s hard to imagine a plan to rebuild the team that doesn’t start by cleaning the slate completely.
But for now, a statement must be made by ownership — a message that things will change, and that this pathetic level of football in Chicago will not continue. In my humble opinion, that move needs to be the immediate termination of Mel Tucker, and — whether publicly or not — putting Marc Trestman on notice.
If Tucker still has a job come the end of this week, consider me baffled by what Bears’ management is thinking.
