Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo Always Delivers in November

It seems like ever since Tony Romo became the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys they have always needed him to save their season once the month of November arrives. For whatever reason they always hover around the .500 mark and put themselves in a position where they are in desperate need to make a run just so they can stay in the playoff discussion. Well thankfully for Cowboys fans they aren’t quite facing that dilemma this year but after losing two straight games and seeing the race for the wild card spots getting a bit cluttered, it was high time for Romo to come back and save the day; and from we saw on Sunday he did just that.

If you look at his career numbers in this month they are staggering: he has 27-6 record, a 66 completion percentage, he has thrown 67 touchdowns to only 18 interceptions, and he has thrown for over 8000 yards — all of which are career highs. He actually has a 75 completion percentage in January but he has only played in three games in that month and we’ll come back to that later.

After losing a tough rivalry game and seeing just how inept Brandon Weeden can be, Romo knew it was time for him to step up and be the savior for this team yet again. When he’s in the lineup, everyone knows that all they have to do is their job and they will be in a position to win; no one tries to do anything that’s out of character that would cause even more trouble for this team.

Now it helped that the coaches came in with a smart game plan to keep Romo healthy; they made sure to get the ground game going early to keep him out of obvious passing downs where the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ defense could simply tee off and rough that tender back up a bit. It was also good to see Romo play smart by immediately checking down or using screens to get the ball out of his hands quickly. And whenever he noticed that Dez Bryant was getting single coverage on the outside, he simply threw it up deep to him, allowing him the opportunity to make a play — and he sure did, to the tune of 6 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Yes it’s huge that Romo came in and had a 74 completion percentage, threw for three touchdowns, and didn’t turn the ball over, but what’s most important was his presence in the lineup. He brought a sense of calm and order to a team that may have panicked and started to doubt itself had Weeden been given another chance to fail. The team is well aware of what Romo can do in this month and they need to get on a bit of a run so that Romo can add more January games to his resume.
