The Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Washington Redskins this Sunday. The Redskins may have two more wins than the Bucs, but neither team is going anywhere this season. Robert Griffin III is back at QB for the Redskins, who had a bye to prepare for this home matchup. One would think this should be a fairly easy call to make given how bad the Bucs have been, but I wouldn’t write this one off just yet.
I always say that picking against teams in the midst of a long losing streak is dangerous. That losing streak has to end at some point, and you never know when that will be. Sure the Bucs are bad and have only one win all season, but that last win came in September. The NFL is a tough league, so no team should be forgotten about. The Bucs have gotten blown out twice this year, once on the road and once at home. Five of their losses have been by less than seven points, and the other was last week to the Atlanta Falcons by 10, but even that game was winnable. This Buccaneers team is capable of winning a game; they just haven’t done so in a while. I think that will change soon, though.
The Redskins showed heart earlier this season by beating the Dallas Cowboys on MNF with Colt McCoy. However, they haven’t played consistent football since and we really have no idea how well RG3 will play. This could be a breakout game for him against the Bucs’ weak secondary. I can see Desean Jackson catching an 80-yard TD bomb right now. However, Griffin may not play well at all, leaving the door open for the Bucs to steal one on the road. The key will be for the Bucs to get Griffin rattled early so he can’t get in any kind of groove.
The Redskins are seven-point favorites, but I really think that is too high. The Bucs are 3-1 against the spread this year on the road, covering in all three since that 56-14 beat down in Atlanta. This game should be pretty close. The Bucs have been getting leads in the fourth quarter, but haven’t been able to hold on to them. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are up late, but the Redskins squeak out a three-point victory in the end.
Like I said earlier, though, don’t count the Bucs out just because they’re 1-8. They’ll win more games this year and I think this will be one of them. The Bucs will take the lead late, only for RG3 to produce a game-tying TD drive. However, with too much time left on the clock, McCown puts the Bucs in position for a game-winning FG as time expires.
Final score prediction: Buccaneers 24, Redskins 21
