Andy Dalton Could Lose Starting Job With One More Bad Week

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who signed a very lucrative deal in the offseason, has performed well under par this season. His lack of consistency is becoming worrisome for an organization that came into this season with high expectations. He seems to be the Achilles’ heel holding the Bengals back from being one of the elite teams in the NFL.

For a lot of teams, this poor performance would be proper cause to bench the quarterback, especially with a very capable veteran backup like the Bengals have in Jason Campbell.  The question is, how much longer should they give Dalton to prove he is the man for the job? If he has another poor performance this week against the New Orleans Saints, it may be time to give Campbell the ball.

The problem with Dalton isn’t that he’s not a talented quarterback; it’s the inconsistencies he continues to show in his game.

There have been games this season — Week 1 through 3 for instance — where he has played extremely well, leading his offense down the field proficiently and playing like an elite quarterback. Then there are other games, like the one last week against the Cleveland Browns, that he just completely falls apart and is unable to make plays.

I feel that in each game, everyone is wondering which Dalton is going to show up. That is not the feeling any team or fan wants out of their franchise quarterback.

Dalton may be walking on thin ice at the moment. If he continues to struggle, how much longer will it be before his starting job is taken away? Depending on how this week’s game goes against the Saints, this may be a very real question head coach Marvin Lewis will have to answer.
