What Can You Expect From the New York Giants’ Orleans Darkwa?

Orleans Darkwa

I’m sure a lot of New York Giants fans were scratching their heads today when the team signed running back Orleans Darkwa from the Miami Dolphins practice squad. I saw several people question why the Giants wouldn’t just sign a veteran back to fill in, while other just simple wondered who he is.

First off, who is Darkwa? Well, he led the Dolphins with 194 all-purpose yards this preseason, and given their running back state, it’s shocking that he wasn’t a permanent fixture on their 53-man roster. Darkwa was able to play four regular season games with the Fins where he made his mark primarily on special teams receiving a +1.0 grade from Pro Football Focus.

For the Giants, he will likely fit right in with the special teams, as he was thrown in the mix at Wednesday’s practice. The Giants are in need of a healthy body to back-up the possibly returning Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams and Darkwa seems more than capable. He averaged 5.2 yards per touch during his Week 1 outing with the Dolphins, and while chances are he won’t see much time in the rotation, it’s nice to know you could rely on him, if only for a few touches.

What can you expect from Darkwa? I expect Darkwa to use this chance to either prove to the Giants that they should keep him around or advertise what he has to offer to the other 31 teams out there. He does have some of the intangibles — the kid is smart so he should have an easy time picking up the playbook. Now I wouldn’t go expecting the world from him, but you should hear his name called during returns.
