For the New York Jets, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10 is the closest they will come to winning a Super Bowl in 2014. That is because it was only their second win of the season. After the game, head coach Rex Ryan proved he still knows how to motivate a team and back his players. Unfortunately, it cost him a $100,000 fine in the process.
I would say Ryan was wrongfully penalized by the league. However, anytime a head coach is seen dropping an f-bomb on television, there needs to be some sort of repercussion. The reason why I say it is wrong for him to get fined is because he was only reacting to the Steelers breaking one of the unwritten rules of football.
With the victory in the bag, quarterback Michael Vick and the offense assumed the victory formation. It was then when Steelers safety Mike Mitchell timed the count and jumped over the line of scrimmage, specifically Jets center Nick Mangold. Mitchell quickly found himself on his back after Mangold hit his legs in midair.
New York was not happy about the incident, which is why a scuffle broke out between the two teams. The Jets were defending their quarterback while the Steelers were clearly frustrated with what transpired during the contest.
Ryan stormed the field and dropped as many f-bombs as he could in the direction of the Pittsburgh bench.
“I think I was saying, ‘Thank you,’” Ryan said the Monday following the game, according to CBS Sports. “Emotions run high in games. Sometimes it’s best to … what happens on the field stays on the field. That’s where it stems from. It’s a very emotional game. Obviously, I’ve got to do a good job of controlling my emotions. Things happen. I’m sorry if I offended anybody.”
Yes, Ryan does have to control his emotions, something has family has failed to do since they began their careers in the NFL. With that said, Ryan was absolutely in the right to defend his players the way he did. Pittsburgh should be ashamed with the way they reacted after the loss.
