The Philadelphia Eagles came crashing back down to Earth on Sunday; just six days after defeating the Carolina Panthers 45-21, the Eagles traveled to Lambeau Field where they were crushed by the Green Bay Packers 53-20.
The Packers outplayed the Eagles in every facet of the game as they appeared to score almost at will. The Eagles were unable to get any pressure on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, allowing him to sit back in the pocket and pick the defense apart, particularly cornerback Bradley Fletcher who was burned all game, giving up 147 yards and two touchdowns.
On offense the Eagles were unable to take advantage of the Packers statistically mediocre run defense, as both LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles failed to find the endzone. The offensive line played an uncharacteristically poor game in which they allowed three sacks and eight tackles for loss. The Packers early lead forced Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez to throw the ball to try to keep the Eagles in the game, and as a result Green Bay was able to sit back and let their pass rush pressure Sanchez into making bad throws.
Overall it was an extremely poor showing by Philadelphia. One of the few bright spots on the offense was rookie wide receiver Jordan Matthews who finished the game with five receptions on eight targets for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Through the past three games Matthews has established himself as a viable deep threat, accumulating 285 yards and four touchdowns on just 15 receptions, giving him an average of 19 yards per reception.
Matthews is having one of the best rookie seasons of any wide receiver in Eagles history. He is the second rookie in Eagles history with back-to-back 100-yard games (the other being DeSean Jackson), and with his touchdown on Sunday he became the first Eagles rookie to have a receiving touchdown in three straight games since Calvin Williams did it in 1990.
Matthews has been playing exceptionally well of late, and he’s only going to get better. It’s safe to say that Jordan Matthews has a very bright future ahead of him in Philadelphia.
