Although it was a rather monumental weekend in the NFC Playoff race, the Dallas Cowboys spent their bye week healing and preparing for the holiday stretch and the daunted month of December. With Monday’s action completed and the calendar now officially turned to Week 12 of the NFL season, the Cowboys’ focus now turns towards another familiar NFC East foe, the New York Giants.
If Dallas wants to win the NFC East, it’ll have to beat a Giants team that is absolutely reeling. With some help during the team’s bye week, the Cowboys seem to have positioned themselves rather nicely to make the playoffs with a 7-3 record. However, any fan will tell you from previous experiences that they often grow weary of late-season collapses, especially the last few seasons.
Although this version of the Cowboys possess that ground-and-pound style to compete in the colder months with their running game and offensive line, it’s still rapidly approaching that month of December. To avoid another late-season debacle, the Cowboys must take care of teams they are better than, and they are obviously way better than the Giants.
No more games like what happened against the Washington Redskins can happen, and they must dominate as they did in their must-win game two weeks ago in London.
The Cowboys need a victory to solidify their presence as legit NFC contenders and to keep the momentum going into what will undoubtedly be a first-place showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day. By winning a game they have absolutely no business losing, Dallas would be 8-3 heading into Week 13′s decisive matchup. I expect the winner of the division to finish with at least 10 wins, and a win over the Giants would send the Cowboys right on their way to fly high over the Eagles.
With an extra week to prepare, Dallas will be more than ready to help keep ailing quarterback Tony Romo upright against an inferior pass rush. Additionally, the defense should be salivating at the chances they’ll get after Eli Manning‘s five-interception game just a few days ago.
The Cowboys still have a lot of work left in front of them. Although they aren’t in first place, they still control their own destiny, and that’s all you can ask for at this point in the season. They can remain in control by completing the season sweep of the lifeless Giants.
