Despite the New England Patriots making it clear they were not interested in signing running back LeGarrette Blount, who was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this week for personal reasons, it appears someone in the organization changed their mind.
According to a league source, Blount will ink a two-year contract with New England in a deal that will be beneficial for both parties. The Patriots, who are experiencing injuries to the running back position, need as much depth as possible in the backfield if they intend on marching through the playoffs on their way to the Super Bowl. Even though Blount is not a premier back, he still manages to do a lot with very little game action. That is exactly what head coach Bill Belichick likes to see from his players.
The move is also good for Blount because he will be re-joined with a team that he experienced success with last season. In 16 games in 2013, he averaged 5.0 yards per carry on 153 rushing attempts while reaching the end zone seven times. That is solid production the Patriots will utilize once again.
Blount was released by the Steelers after he walked off the field early in the win against the Tennessee Titans this past Monday. The reason for his disgust was because Pittsburgh failed to give him one carry the entire game. Even though what Blount did was wrong, one cannot blame him for being upset, especially since he knows how much he can contribute on the field.
With two big games coming up against NFC North powerhouses, it will be interesting to see how the Patriots use Blount.
