Bill Parcells is a very well respected man in NFL circles. So when he talks, people typically listen.
The Hall of Fame former coach of the New York Giants won two Super Bowls for the franchise. On Thursday, he was interviewed and asked about the current Giants, to which he responded that the head coach and quarterback are not the problem, and he couldn’t be more right.
Many people in New York have been calling for Tom Coughlin to be fired as the Giants are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the fifth time in six years. Parcells said that he knows Coughlin can still coach and that he is the least of their problems. The bigger issue comes from management where they have failed to provide Coughlin with the talent to have a perennial playoff team. Coughlin has typically done well to bring the most out of the little talent that he has been given.
The offensive line has been terrible over the last couple of years, and the receivers Eli Manning has to throw to are less than extraordinary. This is more of a reason why Manning had an awful season in 2013 than his own play. Manning has to shoulder some of the blame for 27 interceptions, but the fact that he was getting hit every other play and that he had only Victor Cruz to throw to are huge factors. There aren’t many quarterbacks who would perform under the pressure Manning was facing last season.
The biggest knock against Coughlin this week has been that he hasn’t been able to progress as the game of football has progressed. Some of his former players, specifically Tiki Barber and Antonio Pierce, say that he is too set in his ways and unwilling to adjust. This year, Coughlin has proven that to be untrue.
In his entire tenure with the Giants before this year, Coughlin had one offensive coordinator with him and that was Kevin Gilbride. After an awful offensive performance last year, the Giants decided to move on from Gilbride as they felt it was time for a new voice for the offense. If Coughlin was so set in his ways, he could have easily retired and said he doesn’t want to deal with a new coach and new system, but instead he hired Ben McAdoo, a 37-year-old, to coordinate the offense and was re-energized by it.
Coughlin is clearly open to new things if he knows it will make his team better. He is all about winning no matter what it takes. Earlier in the year, the Giants were off to a bad start, and instead of having a bad attitude about it, all of the Giants players have said that Coughlin was really upbeat and let them play loud rap music during practice to lift their spirits.
This coincided with a three-game winning streak from Week 3 to Week 5.
Coughlin has been, and always will be, known as a stern, no-nonsense coach; but from players’ accounts, it is very clear that he has lightened up and has really made an adjustment. Coughlin is a two-time Super Bowl champ and has been a good coach for a long time. If Parcells says he can still coach and that Manning is still a good quarterback, that’s someone I would want to listen to.
