Until a team is mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, any talk of “next year” is utter nonsense. Take the New York Giants, for instance. They have lost five straight games and have a ton of ground to make up. But don’t tell Jason Pierre-Paul that 2014 is a lost cause.

Ever the eternal optimist, the star defensive end is not writing anything off and even feels that his team can be more than just a spoiler, as he told reporters on the team’s website:

“I think we can run the table; we did it before. With a whole group of guys that (were) different and we have a different group of guys now. I am pretty sure we can do it. Don’t count us out yet. We made it hard for ourselves; we can dig ourselves out of this hole.”

Pierre-Paul used the 2011 season as his reference, when the Giants were 6-6 headed into the last month of the regular season. They actually won only three out of their four remaining games, but made the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

They defeated the Dallas Cowboys twice in that span, including the Week 17 season finale to decide the NFC East divisional crown, a 31-0 white-washing of their longtime rivals. Riding their hot streak, the Giants went on to win it all, defeating the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI.

What better way to begin another run like that than by beating the 7-3 Cowboys, one of the two teams currently ahead of the Giants in the division?

If that does happen, it is entirely possible for JPP’s prediction to at least have a chance of coming true. Weeks 13-16 include games against beatable teams, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-9), Tennessee Titans (2-8), Washington Redskins (3-7) and St. Louis Rams (4-6). The regular season wraps up with a home game against the 7-3 Philadelphia Eagles, the other team the Giants are chasing.

So at 3-7, don’t count the Giants out just yet.
