In the kind of news you just hate to hear, Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry‘s season is over. Unlike most NFL players who have their seasons cut short because of on-field injuries, Berry’s case is much different.
It was discovered on Thursday that Berry has a mass on the right side of his chest, and at this time, it’s thought that he could possibly have lymphoma. He’s currently set to visit with a specialist to determine his exact condition and prognosis moving forward.
Here’s a statement from the safety on his current status:
“I am truly thankful for all of the support from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the entire Chiefs kingdom. At first I was in shock with the diagnosis on Saturday and did not even want to miss a game, but I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight… I am so thankful and appreciative of being a part of this franchise and playing in front of the best fans in the NFL. I will be back!”
While this is a big loss for the Chiefs as they enter the stretch run of 2014, football becomes secondary in a situation like this.
Here’s to hoping for a full and speedy recovery for Berry.
