At 9-2 and riding a seven-game win streak, the New England Patriots are the hottest team in the NFL. With a potential Super Bowl preview set against the Green Bay Packers at legendary Lambeau Field in Week 13, everyone will know which team is the league’s best.
Fans from both sides will be talking it up this week due to belief that their favorite team reigns supreme. However, Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork is wary of some of the fans on the New England side. Simply put, he wants the bandwagon fans to stay as far away from the team as possible.
“So many people saying how bad we were — everything possibly negative people could say, they were saying about us,” Wilfork said, according to CSN New England. “Our No. 1 job was to block out all the noise, ignore it, and just concentrate on what we need to do to get better. And that was our No. 1 goal, and that’s still our number one goal.
“Now you look back 11 weeks later and we’re one of the best teams in the league, so the same people that were saying we were the most terrible team in the league now are patting us on the back. We don’t have room for them. We don’t have room for bandwagoners, guys that just off the bandwagon when things get tough.”
No one can blame Wilfork for feeling the way that he does. I have always wondered how athletes handle the rollercoaster rides that are typical fan bases. Everyone is all about the team when they are playing well and nowhere to be found when the team is slumping. I understand that not all fans ride the bandwagon, but still, it has to be tough on the players to see it happen.
Wilfork’s reaction is a little harsh, especially since the two teams that will be playing on Sunday in Green Bay have incredibly loyal fan bases. At the same time, he wants everyone to know now that the fans better be all in or get off the ride. It makes sense, especially since the Patriots are primed for a deep playoff run.
