Jerry Jones Will Not Let Dallas Cowboys Dissolve

The bye week for the Dallas Cowboys wasn’t completely free from drama this year as one would hope.

Only a few days after going off for 158 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dez Bryant was warning Jerry Jones to not test his loyalty when it came to contract negotiations. Then a few days after this, rumors started leaking about the possibility of Adrian Peterson being released by the Minnesota Vikings, therefore allowing him to fulfill his childhood dream of playing for the Cowboys, which of course means that DeMarco Murray would be looking for a new home next year.

And last but certainly not least, Jones called extending Jason Garrett’s current contract a “nonevent,” whatever that means.

Well thankfully for the Cowboys and their fans, the team went out this past Sunday and beat the New York Giants so that attention could once again be squarely put on football and their race to the playoffs. But just in case there are still a few fans out there who are concerned about these expiring contracts, let me put your minds at ease.

First off, Jones loved Michael Irvin. It didn’t matter how many clubs he went to or how many strippers he did drugs with, the only thing Jerry was concerned about was the fact that he wasn’t invited to the party. As long as Irvin was on the field producing at a Hall of Fame level, he would always have his back, and that is exactly why you shouldn’t believe any of the reports that the Cowboys are concerned about Dez’s off-field antics.

Jerry has been looking for an Irvin ever since he was forced to retire, and he has had some huge misses to get to this point. Anyone remember the team giving up two first-round picks for Joey Galloway or overpaying for Roy Williams? Dez has once again completed Jones, and there is no way he will let him shine with another team.

Jerry wasn’t quite as enamored with Emmitt Smith as he was with Irvin — that was until his team went 0-2 to start the season without him and he then learned the importance of having a workhorse back to help take the pressure off of the passing game. Ever since Emmitt left, he has been through the likes of Troy Hambrick and Julius Jones with the hope that he can find his next Emmitt.

Well, he has one in Murray, and while it would be nice to have Peterson, the fact remains that Peterson will be 30 years old by the start of training camp, and we all know that that’s ancient for a running back. He has way too many miles on him at this point, so why not stick with the 26-year-old back who is already comfortable and producing in this system?

Then there’s the Garrett situation; Jones has had his fair share of puppet coaches who he could control but were ultimately not successful in Dallas, and then he had Bill Parcells, who was successful but was impossible to work with as far as he was concerned. Well, it looks as though he finally has what he’ been looking for in Garrett.

Jones trusts Garrett because he has known him for years ever since he was a player for the Cowboys, so he’s already familiar with how the organization is run and how Jones likes to be heavily involved in every decision that is made. It also helps that Jones knows that Garrett is smart because he is a graduate of Cornell, so he will actually listen to his input.

The players also see this, so they respond to Garrett whenever he speaks, and Garrett uses his smarts to not only handle Jones, but to motivate his players. Fans are starting to see the positive results on the field. So when you factor in all of this information, you must know that there is no way Jones will lets this team get away from him.
