New York Giants Must Give Eli Manning A Big Contract Extension

The New York Giants dropped another very heartbreaking game. A six-game losing streak brings up a lot of questions about Eli Manning’s contract, however, there should be no questions. Manning is, and always will be, the answer at quarterback for the Giants.

No matter how much critics say Manning is not an elite quarterback, to Giants fans he is. If he was ever cut from the Giants, the outrage his fans would have over it would be unbearable.

The question is not whether or not the Giants should get rid of Manning, it’s for how much longer they should extend his contract. The Giants should try to lock him up at a discounted price. Manning wants to finish his career as a Giant, but hasn’t put up flashy numbers that a hefty contract requires. If he takes a small pay cut, it makes everyone happy.

If the Giants don’t re-sign Manning, where else could they possibly turn? The Giants will not lose every game for the rest of the season, so they can’t grab one of the top tier rookie quarterbacks.  Even if they could, I don’t think the Giants are bad enough to where they need an entire overhaul of their roster; they have some very good pieces to build around. It would be very awkward to see Jamies Winston in a Giants uniform.

Manning is 33 years old and still has more than a couple of good years left. He has substantially improved in every category compared to last year, and his offensive line is still terrible. Not all of the interceptions this year were his fault, as many of them were off tipped passes. After the emergence of Odell Beckham Jr. and Larry Donnell, Manning’s play has significantly improved. Critics are overlooking the fact that he threw for three touchdowns and 338 yards against a very stingy Dallas Cowboys defense.

There is no doubt that the Giants have to rebuild their roster, but rebuilding is very different from an overhaul. The new offensive system seems to show flashes of brilliance. It’s only Manning’s first year in the new offense, and next year it will be like second nature to him and he will execute plays more effectively. It wouldn’t be a wise decision to completely shake things up and throw in a new quarterback.

Due to all this speculation, critics aren’t looking on the bright side. The Giants will go into the draft with a high enough pick to get a starting offensive lineman, and that lineman will immediately be able to contribute to the offensive issues the Giants are having. On top of that, Manning will have Beckham and Victor Cruz to make his big plays for him. Cruz will stay in the slot and Beckham will be the deep threat.

The key is not to get rid of Manning, but to build around him in this new offense. Watch and see the show that he puts on the next couple weeks.
