The Bears came into Thanksgiving Day needing a win to even just stay relevant in the NFC Playoff picture. That didn’t happen as the Detroit Lions showed signs of life once again and rolled to a 34-17 win. Other than the fact that their season is now essentially dead in the water, here are the five takeaways from this loss for Chicago.

Whether you want to blame scheme, talent, or whatever else, this defense is the Bears’ biggest issue. They are burned on a week-to-week basis and something major needs to change for them to be a good football team.

There were a number of plays where Long was huge for the Chicago offense. The Lions’ defense is massive and daunting and Long did his part more than often to make sure Cutler stayed upright. Other guys didn’t do as much, though, which is another issue for this team.

3. You Have To Get Matt Forte Involved

While you understand that the Lions’ run defense is quite stout and one of the best in the league, five carries is far too many. On top of that, Forte only had an opportunity for 14 total touches (considering targets) in this game. For their best and most consistent offensive weapon, that’s not a recipe for success.

2. Marc Trestman Needs To Lessen His Responsibilities

Trestman is calling the plays on both sides of the ball and taking on all of the head coaching responsibilities. Just looking at the play-calling in all of this, you have to wonder whether or not he’s going to be able to be successful and handle that kind of workload.

Cutler is a decent quarterback when he’s basically a step above a game-manager. When you tell him to go out there and chuck it, though, it sets him up for failure. The sooner the Bears realize this, the better.
