The Washington Redskins had seen the writing on the wall, but they just did not want to believe it. Quarterback Robert Griffin III has completely lost all control of his mechanics, which is affecting his mental game. The fall from greatness has forced him to the bench. It has got so bad in Washington that the Redskins are already looking to trade Griffin by next season, according to sources within the organization.
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen hired former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden to straighten up Griffin. Unfortunately, Gruden saw right away in training camp and the preseason that the former first-round draft pick is a shell of his Offensive Rookie of the Year self. Still, Gruden attempted to work with him because that is what the organization wants. Of course, that all changed recently.
Griffin has been benched in favor of backup quarterback Colt McCoy, who led the Redskins to an impressive overtime victory over the heavily favored Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 8. The demotion comes at the hands of Gruden, who convinced Snyder and Allen that Griffin simply could not be saved. More importantly, the team has a far better chance of winning and a brighter future with McCoy under center.
The realization cannot be a healthy one within the organization considering they put so much stock into Griffin. He was labeled as the savior of the Redskins, which was somewhat true when he led the team to a playoff win his rookie season. Since then, he has been nothing but a massive disappointment.
With Griffin officially being benched, it does not appear he will ever get his job back as the starter. For that reason, a trade is imminent.
