Although the news hasn’t been confirmed by the league yet, reports state that former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has won his appeal of his indefinite suspension and will be reinstated by the league. With this news, there figure to be a couple teams interested in his services. The team that would make the most sense would be the New England Patriots.
They’re a team that has been known to be able to deal with controversial players in the past and more importantly, have been able to sell those players to the public. Rice has a lot of reconciling to do with the league and with fans across the country before he can truly be welcomed back. With a standup franchise like the Patriots, this would be possible. Beyond that, he could provide them the star running back they’ve wanted for some time.
Even though the Patriots are known as a passing team, they rely heavily on the run as well. Adding Rice to a roster full with high upside running backs would give them some much-needed depth. His elusiveness and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield are just two additional skills that make him a potential target of the Patriots.
There may not be anyone willing to add the back this season, but if there are teams willing to take on the circus that will come with him, expect the Patriots to be in the mix. His combination of running and receiving skills make him an ideal fit.
For him personally, signing with a franchise that will try to make sure his career is resurrected should be a priority. That’s why the next stop in Rice’s career should run through New England.
