After 11 games, the New York Giants sit at 3-8. They’re on the bottom of the NFC East, and have been eliminated from the playoffs. However, with five games remaining, they can still be a competitive team. Starting with today’s match against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the G-Men cannot so much turn their season around, but at least they can make a small turn in the right direction.
The Jaguars are one of the League’s worst teams, sporting a 1-10 record. They have some very talented young players and played a couple of good teams well, but they haven’t been able to put it all together — kind of like the Giants. However, if the Giants can win – and win dominantly – they have a shot to finish their season on a very strong note. Their remaining games, in order, are: at Tennessee Titans, vs. Washington Redskins, at St. Louis Rams, vs. Philadelphia Eagles. With the exception of the Eagles game, the other three games are very, very winnable. The Jags, Titans, Redskins and Rams have a combined 10-34 record.
Last season, the Giants rolled off four straight wins after starting 0-6, and won seven of their last 10. To think that the Giants could win five of their last six games is not out of the question. Even the game against the Eagles isn’t an automatic loss. Maybe the Eagles will have won the division (in which case a win really wouldn’t mean too much), or maybe the Giants will just come out in front of their home crowd and earn the win – you never know in the NFC East.
The point is, the Giants have a very favorable schedule from now until the end of the season. Whether they finish the season 3-13 or 8-8, the Giants’ last game will be against Philadelphia. That isn’t to say they’ll just pack it up and aim for a high draft pick come 2015 – they’re still going to fight.
Knowing the Giants can turn this abomination of a season into something not-so-terrible, I can’t help but feel they’re looking to win, and win big, over Jacksonville. It’s a game they have every right to win, and some momentum could be huge, as their remaining schedule isn’t any more difficult. It all starts today.
A win could propel the Giants to a .500 average and mediocrity, while a loss would turn into a tailspin as the Giants’ season officially crashes and burns.
