Washington Redskins Make Right Call, Will Start Colt McCoy In Week 14
The Washington Redskins have once again been a joke in 2014. In a league driven by production, Robert Griffin III was simply not getting it done on the field. However, that’s not even where most of Washington’s problems are.
There is tension between Griffin III and head coach Jay Gruden. In fact, there is also tension in the locker room between Griffin III and the rest of the team. Because of those ongoing problems and his ineffectiveness on the field, Griffin III lost his job to journeymen Colt McCoy in Week 13.
Against the Indianapolis Colts, the Redskins lost by 22, but McCoy was the least of their problems. In a tough atmosphere on the road, McCoy did his part in trying to get a victory. He completed 31 passes out of 47 attempts for 392 passing yards and three touchdowns.
McCoy has had success in his other start of the season as well. On Monday Night Football in Week 8, the Redskins beat a red-hot Dallas Cowboys team, and the main reason why was because of how good McCoy was at prolonging drives by moving the football on third down. In that game, he completed 25 passes out of 30 attempts for just under 300 yards and a touchdown. He also ran in a touchdown.
Although he has a history of being a bad starting quarterback dating back to his days with the Cleveland Browns, McCoy is playing such better football in 2014. Maybe he’s realizing this is his last chance at a starting job in the NFL, and not only is he taking it away from RGIII, but he’s also running away with it. McCoy scored three touchdowns in Sunday’s game, which is more than RGIII has thrown all season.
Although their season is lost, the Redskins are smart to see what they have in McCoy. If he keeps playing the way he is, it will be tough to bench him even in 2015. With an offseason to work with and more weapons coming in because of the high draft pick, McCoy might just be better than most people think.
