New York Jets Failed To Utilize Chris Johnson Properly
Everyone still remembers Chris Johnson, right? The New York Jets running back has been pretty quiet this season, even though he finally left the Tennessee Titans to head to greener pastures. Unfortunately, thanks to a lack of commitment on the part of the Jets to a true ground-and-pound offense, Johnson has seen much better days.
While some may think that Johnson has lost a step, the truth is that the Jets absolutely failed to utilize him properly. Considering the fact that he has only rushed for 109 times so far this season, he wasn’t used as much as he should have been.
While Chris Ivory was getting the majority of reps since he was playing slightly better, the Jets dropped the ball big-time by not committing to Johnson and giving him more opportunities to run for daylight. Johnson should have been the premiere running back in a three-headed monster attack on offense. Ivory should have seen some reps during Johnson’s breaks, and don’t forget that Bilal Powell is still capable of getting the job done in the heat of the moment.
The fact that the Jets didn’t stick to Johnson as the centerpiece of it all is alarming. Their offense is flat out terrible because they are passing too much and relying on an aerial game that just isn’t there yet due to a lack of talent. Had the Jets committed to running the football more effectively and consistently, perhaps they would have won a few more games this season.
The Jets should have stuck with Johnson when the going got tough. They relied on both Geno Smith and Michael Vick way too much instead of going with the tried-and-true method of running the football. Needless to say, hopefully the Jets learned their lesson for next season as this team is built to ground-and-pound for years to come.
