The Houston Texans head on the road this Sunday to take on the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field.
The Texans are coming off a 45-21 win over the Tennessee Titans last week to improve to 6-6 on the season. With the win, the Texans were able to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. With several teams ahead of them in the chase for an AFC Wild Card spot, the Texans will need to avoid a letdown this Sunday against a Jaguars team that swept them a year ago.
However, this Texans team is much improved under first-year head coach Bill O’Brien. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has had an up-and-down season, but he threw a franchise record six touchdowns in last week’s win. Running back Arian Foster looks like his old self, rushing for 901 yards and seven touchdowns on 180 carries. And it is impossible to write about the Texans without mentioning J.J. Watt. The star defensive end is having an MVP-type season.
For their part, the Jaguars are coming off one of the more impressive wins in franchise history. Facing a 21-point deficit, the Jaguars came back to defeat the New York Giants 25-24 last week. Despite their 2-10 record, the Jaguars appear to be trending in the right direction and will use the rest of this season to gain some momentum heading into the offseason.
The Jaguars’ defense has been lights out of late. In the past two weeks, the defense has recorded nine sacks, six fumble recoveries and two fumbles returned for touchdowns. Rookies Aaron Colvin and Telvin Smith have provided reason for great optimism. With his two-sack performance against the Giants, defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks continues to establish himself as one of the best interior defenders in the league.
Following last week’s win, the Jaguars should be riding high entering Sunday’s game. While the Texans represent a step up in competition from the Giants, the young Jaguars should have a slight edge playing at home.
Final prediction: Jaguars 21, Texans 13
