Adrian Peterson continues to make headlines in that if he wins his appeal, he plans to suit up and play again this season. The Minnesota Vikings‘ running back has been fighting the NFL for months now in hopes of being reinstated to play the game he loves. In what sparked a nationwide controversy due to hitting his son with a wooden switch to the point of child abuse, Peterson already has a dark shadow over him that will prevent football fans from ever rooting for him again.
Should Peterson actually win his appeal over the NFL, the Vikings should absolutely not allow him to play at all this season. The nightmare that would ensue from a public relations standpoint alone is not worth the headache and distractions for him to suit up for a few meaningless games.
The Vikings have done their best to keep the organization moving forward amidst all this controversy surrounding their once star athlete. Truth of the matter is, Peterson is only getting older and might not even finish his career with the Vikings as they’ve probably started to think about life without him.
While Peterson believes he can play for at least another six years or so, these legal issues and thoughts about him being a child abuser will never go away. It’s going to stay with him for the rest of his career and if the Vikings are smart, they will either release him or trade him.
Peterson will go down as one of the best running backs to ever play the game, but sometimes it’s not always about statistics, touchdowns or winning football games. The fact that all these allegations came up dealing with a very sensitive topic will tarnish his image for the rest of his career. No matter where he ends up playing for won’t matter because this is something no one will ever really forget.
What the Vikings should do is part ways with him, even if he is indeed reinstated to play again. It’s in their best interest to just help him get his life back on track but not allow him back as a player. He’s owed at least that thanks to all his contributions to the team, but unfortunately it’s not worth going beyond that. He should be deactivated for conduct detrimental to the team if he is reinstated, and rightfully so.
While the Vikings should not play Peterson ever again, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done in the league. Plenty of teams will want to bring him in and a fresh start on a new team is not out of the question. The Vikings should do the right thing and just let him go as they focus on developing others to keep the organization moving forward.
Overall, the Vikings should take a stand on this entire ordeal and not allow Peterson to step foot on a field again wearing their uniform. It will send a strong message that child abuse should not happen and not be allowed, regardless of fame or fortune. Just because he is an athlete should not excuse him from facing his consequences just like any other member of society as the Vikings should stick to that stance no matter what.
