The Green Bay Packers were beaten 21-13 by the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 and many began to wonder if this game would damage quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ chances to claim the NFL MVP award at the end of the regular season. The simple answer is no. The loss to the Bills hurt, but it was not entirely Rodgers’ fault. Packers receivers were dropping balls left, right and center throughout the game and were unable to get the big play to boost the team’s confidence during the game.
Rodgers threw for just 185 yards for no touchdowns and two interceptions, an exceptionally poor performance for a guy that many believe to be the best at his position right now.
This showing is not representative of Rodgers’ season as a whole, which is what the MVP award is decided upon. For the entire season, Rodgers has thrown for 3837 yards with 35 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 111.2.
These numbers are reminiscent of Rodgers’ 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2011 the Packers won the Super Bowl with Rodgers achieving a 122.5 passer rating with 45 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and 4,643 passing yards.
Rodgers’ numbers are closer to his 2012 stats, trailing that season by just 4 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and around 450 passing yards. If Rodgers can finish the season with less interceptions and more touchdowns, this season will be the best he’s had since the Super Bowl-winning season.
The Packers, who are now joint first place in the NFC North with the Detroit Lions, have two games left to lay claim to the division and help their chances of earning home-field advantage in the playoffs.
Rodgers will be crucial to the team’s Super Bowl chances, with many believing the Packers are destined to feature in this season’s biggest game.
Rodgers currently sits third in the NFL in touchdowns, behind Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning, but he has thrown less than HALF the amount of interceptions as them. This shows that Rodgers is more clinical with his passing and more efficient throughout the season, making less errors and leading his team to crucial game-winning drives.
The bottom line is this team would be nowhere without Rodgers and it is clear that he is the most important player to this team, his value to them is unquestioned and his chances of winning the MVP award should equally be unquestioned.
