In an unsurprising turn of events, it appears that Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman will most likely be fired at the season’s end. Dan Bernstein, who hosts on ’670 The Score’ in Chicago had the news first.

This comes after another humiliating loss on national television. Trestman, considered an offensive guru, had his offense shut out by the New Orleans Saints’ 31st ranked defense for three quarters. The team’s failures, however, extend beyond the field. The entire organization was in turmoil with no end in sight. Between all the in-fighting and coaching issues, it looked as though this was quickly becoming the only option for Chicago.
This is still somewhat of a surprise for the Bears’ organization. Chicago never fires a coach with two years or more remaining on his contract, and Trestman’s contract doesn’t expire until after the 2016 season. It shows how disgusted the organization has become with this situation. The Bears don’t take humiliation lightly, and after several national television appearances where the Bears were blown out, ownership had seen enough.
The Bears’ fanbase has been vocal all season, voicing their disgust with Jay Cutler, Mel Tucker and Trestman, and they finally hit the Bears in the bottom line. There were more than 15,000 no shows at Soldier Field on Monday night; perhaps ownership saw the empty seats and knew that change had to be made.
Interestingly enough, Phil Emery’s fate has not been decided. I find it hard to believe that Emery survives, mostly because Trestman was Emery’s choice, and if Emery’s fate is undecided, that means ownership isn’t certain he is capable of being the general manager of this team. Why would ownership give Emery another opportunity to bring in a new head coach when the first one performed so poorly that the organization had to eat two years of his contract?
Regardless, this is a good first step for the Bears’ organization. This season has been filled with chaos and turmoil, and has reduced the Bears to a national laughingstock. Ownership knows that change has to be made, and they are ready to do it at season’s end.
