During the course of the 2014 NFL season, Ray McDonald has been investigated for possibly beating his pregnant fiancee and also for a possible sexual assault of another woman. The domestic abuse charges against him were dropped, but not before the San Francisco 49ers stood by his side and let him play as if nothing had happened.
But with the news of McDonald possibly being involved in another horrendous crime, the 49ers had little choice but to send him packing. Even though he could be completely innocent of both alleged crimes, there was still a terrible pattern developing. There shouldn’t be a place on any team for a guy who’s even been mentioned with two crimes like domestic and sexual assault in the same season.
Either McDonald just has really bad luck, or his behavior is in need of some serious adjustments. One or the other is accurate, or the truth could lie somewhere in the middle. No matter the case, he doesn’t deserve the privilege of putting on an NFL uniform until his legal issues are resolved and a suspension is served. Just for being named in both of these alleged incidents he should have to serve some games on the shelf under the league’s personal conduct policy.
The 49ers’ decision to release him became much easier with the team’s playoff fate already decided (not that a team would ever be more lenient with a quality player). San Francisco is headed for a new chapter in 2015 (likely without Jim Harbaugh), so there was no reason to bring any of this McDonald baggage along for the next era. He became part of the many pieces of house cleaning the 49ers figure to do, and ultimately made management’s decision an easy one.
As the PTI guys would say — Ray McDonald was in a gots-to-go situation.
