Austin Davis showed flashes this year that made many wonder why the St. Louis Rams didn’t have him on the roster the year before. Shaun Hill has been solid in piloting the Rams since his return from injury with some impressive wins on his resume as well. But neither one of these guys is a legitimate starting caliber quarterback in the NFL, and let’s be honest: Neither is Sam Bradford.
With that in mind, it seems quite obvious that Jeff Fisher should take a seat on Santa Claus’ knee and ask for a franchise quarterback this Christmas. Clearly a starter won’t just materialize and magically put the Rams in the postseason for 2014, but finding one in free agency or the 2015 NFL Draft this offseason is an absolute must. So what are the potential signal-calling options for the team when the 2015 season kicks off?
Coach Fisher has been very stubborn in saying that he would like Bradford to return at a reduced salary, but that seems more likely to end in a divorce than an amiable fix under center. Guys like Brian Hoyer, Jake Locker and Mark Sanchez are set to be free agents this offseason, but they hardly seem like a step up outside of being healthy. The Rams could always get splashy on the trade market and try to make a move for a guy like Jay Cutler from the Chicago Bears, but his contract may turn out to be just as bad as the one the Rams have been stuck paying Bradford on since his rookie year.
With a middling record this season likely to yield yet another middling draft choice in Round 1, it’s highly unlikely that the Rams will get a shot at one of the top two talents in Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston in the 2015 NFL Draft. A trade up the order is always possible, but trying to project a move like that is futile at such an early date. Waiting on a later-round QB likely wouldn’t yield an immediate starter either, so that option wouldn’t be much of a Christmas gift.
At this point it’s hard to tell just what direction the Rams will go in under center, but hopefully whatever they choose won’t have them asking Santa for the same present a year from now.
