There has been several rumors flying around during this NFL season about a team moving to Los Angeles for the 2015 season. Roger Goodell put those rumors to rest this week by declaring that no team would be moving to the city for next season. This, however, does not prevent a team from moving to the City of Angels before the 2016 season, and if any team is going to make that move, it will be the Oakland Raiders.
Of all of the teams that are rumored to be interested in moving to Los Angeles, the Raiders are the only ones that make sense. The San Diego Chargers were created in Los Angeles, but moved to San Diego after one year. So all of their history, including legendary players, games and coaches, are all a part of the city of San Diego. Because they have no roots in Los Angeles, it’s hard to imagine the team would move there.
As for the St. Louis Rams, they have a better reason to want to move because much of their history occurred in Los Angeles. They are also having issues with the city of St. Louis, because they want a long term stadium lease, but recent reports suggest the Rams could be getting the stadium deal they are looking for, stopping them from bolting for Los Angeles.
This leaves the Raiders, who also have an extensive history in the city of Los Angeles. The reason the Raiders are most likely to make this move is because they seem to have been positioning themselves for this move. Their stadium is on a year-to-year lease, meaning they could leave after any season. Also, the Davis family has shown interest in making a move from Oakland. This is expressed mostly by owner Mark Davis‘ attempts to reestablish relationships with other NFL owners and the league. Davis has also reportedly looked into relocating to other cities, such as San Antonio.
Because of the issues with other teams and the fact that the Davis family wants to relocate, if any team is going to be moving to Los Angeles in 2016, it looks like it will be the Oakland Raiders.
