Most people would kill to have an opportunity to play in the NFL, but for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, squandering his appears to be his top priority.
After being suspended for the first 10 games of the 2014 season due to his third positive test for marijuana, Gordon has been suspended prior to the Browns’ Week 17 game after missing team walkthroughs on Saturday morning.
He’s been placed on the reserve/suspended list, and his roster spot will be taken by wide receiver Phil Bates, who was promoted off the practice squad.
This latest show of futility is just the cherry on top for what has turned out to be a disappointing start to Gordon’s once-promising NFL career. While he’s shown the physical tools and natural instincts to be one of the best pass-catchers in the game, his complete disregard for team and league rules has left fans wondering if he’ll ever live up to his sky-high potential.
What makes it all the more easy to accept that Gordon will never get it is that he’s been having these problems since college – or possibly even before. He was suspended twice at Baylor for marijuana-related issues, and came into the league via the 2012 Supplemental Draft with red flags draped around his neck.
Blame it on a faulty alarm clock, traffic or unruly pet if you’d like, but there’s no excuse for Gordon anymore. He’s proven to be a major liability throughout his three years in the NFL, and apparently can’t even keep track of time anymore.
The wonder has worn off – it’s time to admit Gordon just doesn’t get it.
