If you saw the 1989 classic “Batman” with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, no doubt you remember the famous line the Joker uttered during the movie.
“This town needs an enema!”
Chicago Bears fans no doubt feel the same way right about now. Only the Bears don’t need an enema so much as a colonoscopy. Heck, a full-body transplant would do the trick about now, but with the team’s current luck, the patient would reject the organs.
It is clear the wheels have come off the Bears, and the team is clueless how to fix the problem. Head coach Marc Trestman and some of his staff may be gone on Monday. Jay Cutler, who will collect nearly $60 million of guaranteed money from the Bears in one of the worst contracts ever handed out to a quarterback, may not even be the starter after this year.
Is it any wonder Chicago sports fans whooped and hollered with joy at all of the baseball transactions in December?
This is why the Bears need a makeover in the offseason. They are used to dominating the Chicago sports headlines, but when the team can’t even compete in the final weeks of the NFL regular season, you know something is wrong.
With the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions sitting atop the NFC North standings, and the Minnesota Vikings looking more and more like a team on the rise, the Bears are definitely in turmoil.
Expect to see some major housecleaning on Black Monday, starting with Trestman. Cutler may also be gone if the team can trade him. Many players who have contributed to the negative attitude on this team are likely out the door as well.
Remember the baseball expression “You can’t tell the players without a scorecard?”
You may need one to keep up with the changes. The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox dominated the headlines in December with their free-agent signings.
The Bears will soon prove that they mean business.
