By all accounts, the Michigan Wolverines head football coach job will go to Jim Harbaugh when all is said and done. The Oakland Raiders, however, aren’t going to give up without a fight.
According to reports, the Raiders are still set on making their pitch to Harbaugh, who has allegedly already agreed to become his alma mater’s next head football coach. While it appears pen hasn’t been put to paper, Harbaugh is all but guaranteed to be heading back to Ann Arbor.
The Raiders and stubborn owner Mark Davis, however, aren’t okay with leaving it at that.
The biggest thing that could give the Raiders an edge is money. Although Michigan reportedly offered Harbaugh a six-year, $48 million contract, the Raiders (an NFL team, in case you weren’t sure) obviously have enough money to up the ante. If Harbaugh values money as much as tradition, he could opt to take the Oakland job instead.
It’s also known that Harbaugh’s family would prefer to stay in the Bay Area, so that could also be a factor.
That’s why the Raiders must put the pedal to the metal in their pursuit of Harbaugh. While it’ll obviously be difficult to overcome Harbaugh’s connections with the Michigan football program, they have money and location leaning in their favor. If they can offer him extensive control of an NFL franchise while also making his bank account a little bigger than the Wolverines can, the Raiders must keep communication lines open.
Put simply, the Raiders must hire a big-name coach. They can’t continue to settle for mediocrity, which they’ve done for some time. Bringing in a well-known coach like Harbaugh would not only give them a leader with a track record of turning teams around, but also a fiery coach who can instantly instill a winning mentality.
If the Raiders want to return to relevance, the Khakis must come to Oakland.
