The offseason has officially begun for the New York Jets as they have a long list to work on in hopes of being contenders again next year. One of the most glaring areas on the team that needs much improvement is with their quarterback situation. There is no guarantee that Michael Vick will return or if the next wave of new management will even want him as an option anymore. Geno Smith needs much more work before he’s given a starting position again as he’s still a work-in-progress. It actually makes the most sense for the Jets to address this need via free agency by acquiring one of the top options that should hit the very thin market at quarterback in Jay Cutler.
It’s safe to say that things aren’t working out anymore between Cutler and the Chicago Bears. He once brought them a ton of glory and gave them the best chances to win football games, but as of late has dropped to the very bottom in almost every category you can think of the past few years. It’s gotten so bad, he’s even been booed at home games in the Windy City. Since the Jets have the sixth spot in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, they shouldn’t actually waste it on a quarterback but rather, go after acquiring Cutler to help bring in a veteran presence they haven’t had in years who is capable of winning football games.
The Jets have very little chance of drafting athletes like Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston without giving up a ton in return to move up in the drafting order. They should actually go after a cornerback and head into training camp come this summer with a full open quarterback competition between Jay Cutler, Smith and Matt Simms.
Cutler will be expensive due to what he’ll be looking for if he is indeed released by the Bears, but the free agency market at quarterback isn’t big at all. He actually leads the pack compared to those that are going to be available since it features athletes like Matt Moore, Mark Sanchez and Christian Ponder, just to name a few. When one thinks about it, Cutler brings the most quality, experience and upside to thrive in a change of scenery. Cutler was successful before and should be a winner again with the right team that gives him the support he needs to elevate his game again.
Overall, Cutler deserves a second chance, but sometimes in professional football, your time comes and it’s then time to move on to greener pastures. Cutler no doubt will have a chip on his shoulder to prove he can be an effective starting quarterback if he is to start all over again elsewhere. Make no mistake about it, Cutler could lead the Jets to much better times ahead.
