A late Christmas gift for New England Patriots fans arrived Monday afternoon. Tom Brady has restructured his deal with the Patriots, giving the team an additional $24 million in cap room.
Brady continues to exhibit a team-first mentality that is a rare sight in the bustling business that is today’s NFL. It is clear that Brady is intent on staying in New England for the duration of his career because of the amount of dollar signs he is forgoing to enable the Patriots to remain a formidable team.
That extra $24 million gives fans hope that the Pats will be able to bring back both Devin McCourty and Darrelle Revis. It was hard to imagine them keeping both of those secondary fixtures before the news about Brady’s restructured deal, as the Pats will also have to make decisions about Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley, Nate Solder and others.
If this pays off, and the Patriots are able to retain their key cogs while also having the ability to make a splash in free agency, the Patriots will remain kings of the hill in the AFC for years to come.
In regard to Brady’s legacy, his willingness to put his team first indicates just how serious he is about winning. Everyone says they like to win, but Brady continues to show that winning is part of him—that he has internalized victory and cares about it more than money.
The Patriots having more financial resources benefits Brady because he will continue to have strong personnel suiting up with him in the locker room every Sunday. A secondary that has both Revis and McCourty is a secondary that can win for years, and Brady wants that on his side.
