The Detroit Lions played fantastic defense all season long. Most would argue that their plethora of defensive stands in 2014 are what got them into the postseason for just the second time since the turn of the century in the first place.
While the offensive side of the football for Detroit seems to still be in search of a tried-and-true leader, their defense is undoubtedly led by Ndamukong Suh, the NFL‘s most coveted defensive pending free agent this coming offseason.
After their 24-20 NFC Wild Card game loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday evening, the Lions will have no choice but to try their hand at convincing Suh to continue his career in the Motor City moving forward.
Although never short on controversy, Suh’s overall importance to this roster goes without saying. More often than not on Sunday, Suh was able to dismantle a talented Cowboys offensive line and put pressure on Tony Romo and ultimately get to him for at the time what were two very important sacks. The question now is whether or not Suh’s impressive performance in Dallas will be for a contract with Detroit or if he ultimately played his last game dawning Honolulu blue.
The Lions will have to present the proper package that will convince Suh to continue playing football in Detroit. The defensive tackle has often been the subject of rumors that suggest him wanting to be in a New York-esque market come the beginning of the 2015 NFL regular season.
If the Lions are unable to retain the defensive monster that has been theirs since they selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to say that they will have to somewhat start from scratch when it comes down to figuring out which side of the football will bring them back to the postseason. That’s something which rarely happens in what right now is a very sour city of Detroit.
