I had a feeling that even though Tom Coughlin was remaining with the New York Giants for 2015, there would be other changes to the coaching staff. I thought that the announcement would have happened already. Then, all of a sudden, I hear that Perry Fewell and Peter Giunta have been fired by the Giants.
This is a great decision for the simple fact that the Giants’ defense was horrible this past season and it was especially bad against the running games of the teams they were facing. The Giants’ defense ranked 29th last season and most of that had to do with all of the season-ending injuries early on to many of the top performing defensive players. The fact that the team couldn’t cope with these injuries and play together as a team is a coaching issue, and I think that allowing another defensive coordinator to come in and take over is a great idea.
Fewell was hired as the defensive coordinator in 2010 to work under Coughlin and has been heading the defense since. Guinta has been with the team since 2006, and a lot of people are actually surprised he got fired for the simple fact that he has been with the team for so long. Either way, both coaches had a job to do that wasn’t done.
With season-ending injuries to Jon Beason, Mathias Kiwanuka and Robert Ayers, along with three of the top four cornerbacks, the Giants’ season looked dismal at best. Prince Amukamara and Walter Thurmond III were big season-ending injuries that the Giants just couldn’t afford to have with an already shaky defense.
After three of the four top cornerbacks ended up on Injured Reserve, it was up to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who finished the season with 38 tackles and two interceptions, and Chykie Brown, who finished with 40 tackles. I feel that if Rodgers-Cromartie didn’t miss so much game time in October due to nagging injuries, his numbers could have compared to those of Amukamara.
One thing I have a problem with when it comes to the firing of Guinta and Fewell is that Giants owner, John Mara, and general manager, Jerry Reese, are now giving Coughlin complete control over who his coaching staff is going to consist of. I’m pretty sure that is what got them into this mess in the first place? I’m sure that having worked with Fewell in the past, when he served as defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars under Coughlin, played a part in him being hired with the Giants, too.
I’m hoping that Coughlin makes some good decisions when it comes to the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach positions. Maybe Steve Spagnuolo would be a good fit. I wonder what will become of Tom Quinn, the special teams coordinator for the Giants — his job is also in question.
I guess we will have to wait it out to see.
