It has been quite a seesaw affair since the season ended as to whether Perry Fewell, defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, would lose his job. At first it seemed likely he would lose his job, then as recently as Tuesday it was reported that he would be retained for next year. On Wednesday morning, however, the Giants officially announced that Fewell would not return, so now it is time to find a replacement.
Steve Spagnuolo is currently the secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens and should be the next defensive coordinator for the Giants. Spagnuolo was previously with the Giants in the 2007 and 2008 seasons where he saw his star rise at an unbelievably fast rate. Since leaving the Giants after the 2008 season to become the head coach of the St. Louis Rams he has fallen off the map in a big way.
Before coming to the Giants in 2007, Spagnuolo had never been a defensive coordinator, but his first year in that role was a banner year. He coached the defense that stopped one of the best offenses in NFL history in Super Bowl XLII, when they held Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to 14 points in what many consider the biggest upset in NFL history.
After only one season as a defensive coordinator, Spagnuolo was being considered for head coaching jobs, but he decided to spend another successful year with the Giants before taking a head coaching job. Spagnuolo has proven, albeit in a short period of time, that he can coach defense in New York, and he is the perfect guy for the Giants to get back for next year.
Yes Spagnuolo’s last defensive coordinator job didn’t go so well with the New Orleans Saints in 2012, but he has some pieces in New York to work with. The key to the Giants’ Super Bowl in Spag’s first season was the pass rush, and the Giants have some pass rushers with high potential. Assuming they bring back Jason Pierre-Paul, Spagnuolo would likely be able to get the most out of him, and he might be able to get young Damontre Moore to reach his potential as a game-wrecking pass rusher.
Since leaving the Giants Spagnuolo hasn’t had much success, and it could be argued that he moved on too quickly which has hurt his career. Two years as a defensive coordinator may not have been enough experience for him to have taken a head coaching job, but now that the Giants have an opening it would be mutually beneficial for Spagnuolo to become the next defensive coordinator. He would get the chance to get his career back on track, and the Giants would get a coordinator who has a proven track record with the organization.
