It has been known for some time that the Seattle Seahawks are likely to release Marshawn Lynch at the end of the season if they are unable to lock down a trade. The main reason is because his cap hit will be $8.5 million in 2015. Not to mention, there have been numerous issues between Lynch, the coaches and the Seahawks organization. If Seattle does indeed release Lynch at the end of the season, here are five teams that could sign him.

The New England Patriots ranked 18th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (107.9), but they basically accomplished that by committee. Depending on what happens in the playoffs, the Patriots could be looking to upgrade the running back position in the offseason. One player who can amass for over 1,200 yards on his own would be quite the weapon to give quarterback Tom Brady, who has only had one 1,000-yard rusher in the last four seasons.

The Detroit Lions saw another one of their solid seasons come to a screeching halt. As good as the team has been, especially on defense, one area they desperately need to improve is the running game. The Lions were only able to muster 88.9 rushing yards per contest, which is not ideal for a team looking to win its division and go deep in the playoffs. The addition of Lynch to a high-powered passing game could do wonders.

After rushing for 1,255 yards in 2013, Ryan Mathews was unable to follow it up in 2014 due to injuries. With him set to enter free agency, the San Diego Chargers must consider going in a new direction at running back. The team should be a playoff contender due to their potential in several areas, but rushing for 85.4 yards per game is definitely holding them back. Signing Lynch would give them a much-needed extra punch on offense.

The Arizona Cardinals ranked 31st in the NFL with 81.8 rushing yards per game. The fact that they were able to have the best record in the NFC for most of the season with a dismal running game is promising for what the future holds. Still, there’s no denying Arizona must do something with their backfield, which is where Lynch comes in. Despite the friction between the two parties, Lynch would make them guaranteed contenders in the NFC West.

1. Oakland Raiders

The team most likely to sign Lynch is the Oakland Raiders. The serious lack of a rushing attack (77.5 yards per game) is holding the young team back, which has to change in 2015. Even though Lynch may not want to play for a team that is still very much in the building process, the fact that he’s from Oakland could give him incentive to play for the Raiders. Of course, a big contract would have to accompany it.
