The 2014 NFL season may be over for the San Diego Chargers, but they are looking toward the future. Recently, the Chargers inked the former St. Louis Rams‘ wide receiver, Austin Pettis, to a contract, and he is a nice addition to the Chargers’ receiving group next season.
Pettis didn’t get much play with the Rams in 2014 as he finished with just 12 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. The Rams only used Pettis in limited situations and he was slotted behind both Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey on the depth chart. Now that he is with the Chargers, he should see more chances to produce in an offense that likes to spread the ball around and keep everyone involved.
The former third-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft is also a hard-working and a no-trouble guy in the locker room. Many have praised his professionalism and ability to stay out of trouble off the field.
Pettis has the raw ability to be a solid receiver in the league and he flashed his potential when he stepped onto the field with the Rams. He can make some highlight catches, but the knock on him is his inconsistency and dropped passes.
The Chargers could use Pettis in third-down situations and inside the goal line, where he is best suited to play. Also with Pettis, the Chargers can utilize his talents as a return man. Pettis took some kickoffs and punts during his time with the Rams and he may get a chance to do the same thing in San Diego.
Will this move make the Chargers Super Bowl favorites next season? No, but Pettis is the type of guy who can make a small difference go a long way.
