The Washington Redskins are in dire need of upgrades on defense when it comes to defending against the pass. Last season alone, they ranked 24th against the pass and 12th against the run. While they looked promising when it came to stopping the run, the truth of the matter is that if you can’t stop high-octane passing attacks, you won’t win many football games. This is why at the 2015 NFL Draft, it makes most sense for the Redskins to draft defensive end Randy Gregory.
Having a playmaker of his caliber on a defensive line opens everything up when coming up with better schemes against top offenses. At Nebraska, Gregory registered 115 tackles with 17.5 sacks and was always able to use his keen defensive abilities to make key stops late in games.
The Redskins might make a defensive overhaul next season when it comes to personnel, but they should still stick with their 3-4 defense. Should they go in this route of the draft, they could easily convert Gregory into an outside linebacker and utilize his blitzing abilities like there is no tomorrow. Otherwise, if they use a different defensive system, he would also thrive as a defensive end.
Gregory dominates when it comes to pass rushing and could make that aspect on the Redskins even more consistent. His burst speed off of the line of scrimmage is something to watch in awe as he is incredibly good at getting his timing down with snap counts flawlessly.
With the fifth pick in the draft, Gregory should still be there for the taking and would make a ton of sense for the Redskins. He’s the top rated defender in the draft and would contribute almost immediately as a starter. One area of concern for most teams might be his health as throughout his college career he’s dealt with various injuries, but still was durable enough to continue being consistent.
Overall, should the Redskins go down this path, expect a huge rookie season for Gregory as he transitions into the pro scene. He could be a superstar in the making who would be a defensive anchor for years to come.
