Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots coaching staff and players will be solely focused on stopping Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts to advance to the Super Bowl, and it’s clearly not a given that New England wins. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume the Patriots do best the Colts on Sunday night. Who should New England fans root for between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks?
If you just focus on what is best for the Patriots, the answer is simple: The Seahawks.
Seattle’s defense is playing better than Green Bay’s right now, so Richard Sherman and company may seem like the harder matchup for the Patriots. But there’s a clear reason why fans of the Patriots should want to see Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and the rest of the Seahawks team in the Super Bowl in Arizona, should the Patriots advance past Indy.
Tom Brady’s legacy.
Both QBs are headed for the Hall of Fame, but the discussion of who has been the better QB between Brady and Peyton Manning has been an ongoing, unwinnable argument for a while now. Brady’s supporters point to all of the postseason success (more Super Bowl wins, Super Bowl appearances and playoff wins). Those who favor Peyton point to all of the regular season statistics, records and MVPs. QBs should be, and mostly are, judged by their performance in the playoffs. That puts Brady ahead of Manning — not that it will sway the Manning fans, but it needs to be said.
The Brady haters and Manning backers may never be swayed to change their stance, but there is something that should help Brady put an exclamation point on this whole argument— not only getting to a sixth Super Bowl and winning a fourth, but defeating essentially the same defense that completely shut down Manning in last year’s Super Bowl.
Manning and the Denver Broncos came into the Super Bowl as one of the best offenses in the NFL and then only mustered eight points against a great Seahawks defense. Manning was 34-of-49 for 280 yards with one TD and two interceptions. That’s not exactly a stellar performance and the game was never even close.
The Manning fans and Brady detractors may not care if Brady wins a fourth Lombardi Trophy or which team he helps the Patriots defeat in doing so. But they should.
