The New York Jets finally got it right by bringing in top notch individuals to take the franchise into a bold new direction. With new faces and philosophies at head coach with Todd Bowles, general manager Mike Maccagnan and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, the Jets have the perfect balance of defensive and offensive oriented minds to turn things around nicely next season.
Bowles is highly respected and was regarded as a top head coaching candidate this year. His players love to play for him as he’s a disciplinarian who gets the most out of his players to focus on the attention to details while executing their assignments. He knows defense like the back of his hand and should pick up easily to the established identity of the Jets being a solid defensive unit.
It’s great to see the Jets didn’t rush into anything when it came to their new head coach. While many expected them to wait for Dan Quinn to be available once the Seattle Seahawks‘ season was over, Bowles is shaping up to be the better fit for them anyway.
Maccagnan brings an incredible amount of value to the Jets when it comes to scouting talent and finding hidden gems. Last year, the Jets had 12 draft picks that produced very little. Almost all of them were either injury-prone, released due to being unable to play at a pro level or just didn’t live up to expectations.
The Jets need to score home runs when it comes to their draft picks and also make smart decisions once free agency hits. It might sound crazy, but they are actually just a few pieces away from building a team worthy of contending in the NFL Playoffs.
Gailey will finally bring a much-needed presence on offense that should produce immediate results. He can turn even the worst kind of offenses into a unit capable of keeping the chains moving. He coaches based on the strengths of his players which is always a good philosophy.
Could Gailey turn incumbent quarterback Geno Smith into a quality starter? Perhaps one way the Jets can actually score more touchdowns again is to change their entire offensive playbook. Maybe utilizing a spread offense, something Smith was excellent at back in his collegiate days, could be exactly what the Jets need to refresh things offensively.
While the ground-and-pound offense was successful for the most part last season, the Jets hired the right offensive coordinator who could build upon it while incorporating some new methods of attack. It would be nice to see the Jets do more quick passes instead of those useless Wildcat plays that never seemed to work against anyone.
Owner Woody Johnson was smart to surround himself with key football consultants in Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, because they tremendously aided in all these additions to leadership. Both were crucial in helping Johnson take the necessary steps to bring his franchise back into a more stable state. Let’s face it, the past few years have been a debacle when it came to quarterbacks, lack of spending in free agency and how most of the last draft picks are looking more like busts than projected stars.
It might take some time, but rest assured that the Jets are well on the path towards contending. If they make some key moves in free agency, take care of their quarterback situation and have a successful draft with instant contributors, it’ll only be a year or two before everything starts building towards a championship.
Perhaps it might be wishful thinking or the fact that the Jets can’t possibly get any lower than the debacle that was the 2014 season, but with all of these talented individuals running the show, it’s nice to see the Jets finally got it right. Leadership and brilliant coaching can push a team towards greatness because it’s usually the start of a solid foundation. Everyone knows it’s what the Jets have been lacking for quite some time now.
