Unless you are a member of the NFL‘s 12th man and feel it’s okay to paint your entire body lime green, there’s a good chance you hate the Seattle Seahawks. If you don’t, you may not have seen the Seahawks play your favorite team in recent memory. Regardless of your opinion, the Seahawks seem to have embraced their reputation as the bad boys.
Head coach Pete Carroll‘s ability to change the preconceived notion that defensive backs had to be smaller and quicker ultimately led to the Seahawks’ rise to success. It triggered a mindset that the Seahawks were going to do whatever they could to be the NFL’s best defense. Last year in the Super Bowl, they held one of the greatest offenses in NFL history to just eight points. This year, they’re just one game away from being right back where they left off.
Naturally many football fans hate the Seahawks due to the fact they’ve been winning and are continuing to be the favorites to do so. But if you can’t admit there’s a but of arrogance and confidence with this team, then you probably haven’t been watching them very closely. The Seahawks don’t just wish to win. They want to completely bury their opponents into oblivion.
It doesn’t matter who you are. Earlier this season against the New York Giants, Seahawks defensive back Jeremy Lane hit a Giants player below the knee in garbage time. As a result, Giants backup running back Michael Cox broke his leg and was lost for the season. The Seahawks responded emphatically at Lane’s play and celebrated in unison.
That’s only one example of how brutal the Seahawks can be to any opposition, but it illustrates the point that it doesn’t matter what the situation is. They could be blowing you out. It could be a close game. Regular season, postseason, Super Bowl — none of it’s relevant. The Seahawks are coming to break you, and they don’t care what you think of them.
This is the atmosphere that Carroll has created in Seattle. The Seahawks are arrogant, cocky and downright mean; and they are also relentless. They will stop at nothing to win against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. You can all but guarantee they will go after Aaron Rodgers‘ torn calf in their effort to slow down the best quarterback in the NFL.
The 2015 NFC Championship is a match made in heaven, with the league’s best defense against the league’s best quarterback. Can Rodgers rally his offense in the most hostile environment imaginable? There’s no question to the neutral fan the Packers are the good guys and the Seahawks are the villains.
If Carroll can get a second ring in two years, he’ll be just fine with that.
