Owner Woody Johnson continues to gain popularity these days for making some bold decisions to put his New York Jets heading into a better direction. It won’t be an easy task as it will surely take a year or two before the Jets can get back into being a playoff-contending team again, but he’s making all the right changes needed for future success. He’s already got the new face of his coaching staff in head coach Todd Bowles and a much smarter general manager when it comes to scouting talent in Mike Maccagnan. How much more house cleaning can the Jets continue to do to ensure some better times ahead?
A whole lot more apparently.
Continuing more firings, the Jets have parted ways with both senior director of college scouting in Terry Bradway and the director of college scouting in Jeff Bauer. This raises the point that perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the Jets have struggled mightily these past few years is due to their lack of proper scouting.
I’ve always been a firm believer that the best teams in the NFL are the ones that find the hidden gems in the rough when it comes to the draft. The Jets have lacked the proper scouting to find those top college prospects that will become immediate contributors that nobody would really pick up on. The last few drafts for the Jets except for a handful of players have been flat-out terrible.
The Jets are in a prime position to start the slate clean and bring in a whole new mentality to the organization. With some top additions to their coaching and management staff, the Jets are now on pace to make smarter decisions not just at the draft, but in free agency as well.
Should the Jets acquire some necessary pieces in free agency like a top cornerback, quarterback or even some more wide receivers to compliment what they already have, they will be back to winning more football games in no time.
Of course, championship teams always track their incredible success by having strong drafts that pay off nicely once all their draft picks develop the right way. The Jets are smart to clean house of all the old incompetent scouting personnel since the time is now to invest in quality draft picks by having the right leadership in place to make those decisions.
Overall, much praise should be headed to Johnson with how he swiftly took care of business this offseason and surrounded himself with the right football consultants to fix the Jets. He couldn’t do it alone, but has now been adding some pretty crucial pieces to lay the leadership foundation necessary for long-term success. Needless to say, better football is indeed coming to the Jets, the likes of which they haven’t seen in years.
