Clearly, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has a long ways to go before he can be mentioned in the same breath as Dallas Cowboys great Roger Staubach. With that said, at least one person is willing to forgo the time and make the comparison. And, that one person is someone who is worth listening to.
“He kind of reminds me of watching [Roger] Staubach,” New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said, according to CBS Sports. “I remember a lot of Staubach’s spectacular running plays where it looked like he was about to get tackled by three or four guys, and he would Houdini it out there somehow. You see Wilson doing some of the same things.”
It is nearly guaranteed Belichick is referring to Wilson’s ability to get away from three Green Bay Packers players during the two-point conversion with 1:25 left in the NFC Championship Game. Wilson somehow found tight end Luke Wilson in the end zone to covert the two-point attempt, which helped propel them to victory. Even though Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was there to make the play and simply failed to do so, history will remember Wilson’s incredible toss.
Belichick is also referring to Wilson’s ability to juke the heck out of players once he gets out of the pocket. His rare ability to make plays with his legs as well as his arm makes him an incredibly dangerous quarterback.
In three seasons, Wilson has compiled a 42-13 record, which includes 6-1 in the playoffs. He is a Super Bowl champion, two-time NFC Champion and he has been selected to two Pro Bowls. He also has 72 touchdowns to just 26 interceptions in his career.
Even though his accolades cannot compare to Staubach’s two Super Bowl rings, five NFC Championship victories, six Pro Bowl selections, 1971 NFL MVP Award and a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Wilson’s on-the-field play is certainly comparable.
Belichick better hope Wilson does not do a good Staubach impression during the Super Bowl because it will most likely only lead to disaster for New England.
