It’s been reported that the Chicago Bears will name Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator. This comes on the heels of the Bears naming Ryan Pace as their new GM and appointing John Fox as the team’s head coach. Fangio’s arrival in the Windy City will put an end to Mel Tucker’s two-year tenure as Chicago’s DC.
This addition to the Bears’ coaching staff is a major upgrade. Following the two seasons under Tucker, Chicago will now get a coordinator who has made the San Francisco 49ers’ defense one of the best in the NFL over the past four years. Since becoming the DC in San Francisco in 2011, the 49ers have ranked no lower than fifth in the NFL in overall defense.
So far, Pace has made the right moves in getting the Bears back to where they should be. It is also evident that Pace feels the first priority on this team should be defense. Having the combination of Fox, a defensive-minded coach, and Fangio on the sidelines in 2015 should help clean up the mess that’s been left over the past two seasons on the defensive side of the ball, and give Chicago their true identity back.
The hiring of Fox and Fangio could lure some vital free agents from the Denver Broncos and the 49ers to Chicago. More importantly, Fox and Fangio will take away the pressure of carrying the entire team from quarterback Jay Cutler and the rest of the Bears’ offense.
This looks to be the beginning of a new era within the Bears’ organization, and the reemergence of the “Monsters of the Midway.”
