Usually, a quarterback about to play in the Super Bowl would be answering questions about the game. Today, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady faced questions about everything but. The most important thing to take from the interview was that Brady claimed to have no involvement in the deflating of 11 footballs. At this point, he must be considered innocent.
Brady went into detail describing how he selects the balls to be used in the game and also stated that he has no knowledge of what happens to the balls after he makes his selection. Despite the Patriots’ history of stretching the rules, there’s no reason to believe Brady is involved. Especially when there’s a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, altering footballs is the last thing on a quarterback’s mind.
Although he’s admitted to preferring balls that are on the lower end of the acceptable range scale (12.5), he also claimed that he wouldn’t know if the psi was slightly off. Why would he? As explained in the press conference, he’s not in the pocket squeezing the football. When several 300-pound linemen are bearing down on you, the air pressure of a football isn’t a part of the quarterback’s thought process.
If reports that the balls were replaced at halftime are true, there was no advantage gained by the Patriots. New England led the Indianapolis Colts 17-7 at the half before outscoring the Colts 28-0 with the “legal” balls.
It seems like every time the Patriots are having success, the team’s integrity comes under attack. While some of this is their own doing, Brady’s integrity really hasn’t been questioned before. So why is it now? Unless new information comes out, he must be taken for his word.
